Maldives Human Rights Commissioner Ahmed Mujuthabaa resigns from office

30 September 2005

Male' - Confirmed reports say that the Maldives Human Rights Commissioner Ahmed Mujuthaba has resigned from his post because he was unable to perform his duties independently. He has not been going to office for sometime now over these problems and is believed to have resigned because he is disgusted with the recent incidents in Male', last August, in which he personally witnessed absolute inhumane brutality by Gayyoom's militia.

The Maldives Human Rights commission was established by Gayyoom after the murders committed by his security police in the jail in 2003. The Commission has however not been allowed to look into cases and investigate the crimes committed by Gayyoom's forces and all complaints to date have been in vein and the place had been just another attempt by Gayyoom to hide his crimes.

His associates say that he had resigned for 2 reasons. Lack of cooperation rather harassment from the government and its instructions and lack of powers and independency and powers to be provided to the commission in the Bill of Human Rights, will not conform to International Human Rights standards and hence not be possible to protect human rights with such a bill. Gayyoom still controls a clear majority in the parliament and he has personally been instructing his brother in law, the Speaker of the Special Majlis to water down the bill. Resistance to certain clauses have been fierce by Gayyoom's cronies in the parliament which led to this decision.

Local news have not reported this as usual since it is not a big issue for the Gayyoom's government. This is yet another development that proves that Gayyoom is only bring about cosmetic changes to muster international support so that he can remain in power till he dies or looses his sanity and pass on the reign to his family.

Hon. Mujuthaba was also a cabinet Minister of Gayyoom but resigned from the government in 1991. He is widely respected in the Maldives and is known as a man of principle and a high level of integrity and respect.
