The 'Drag Culture' of Golhaa Force exposed

25 November 2006

Despite receiving orderly training from experts from abroad, as in the case of recent training given to Maldives Police by the Thailand and other international experts, Maldives Police, known famously as the Golhaa Force, is unable to put it into practice. Time and time again, we have witness the Maldives Police use extreme and brute force to crackdown on dissidents and peaceful protests. We see continuation of the culture of arbitrary arrests and indefinite detention without charge, and most importantly, we see the tradition of torture and beatings still rampant in the system.

One might wonder why! Well, "when you have a culture of immorality and irresponsibility, a culture of being allowed to do whatever these young people want, in return for carrying out the orders of their corrupt leaders. By creating this kind of cultures, what you get is a bunch of confused young , who cannot be entrusted with protecting the people and the nation," said a ex-military commander. "That is why, the Maldives Police and the Army, have forgotten their prime responsibility of protecting the people and the country, and have sided with an illegitimate and corrupt regime."
